Wildlife Areas

BrownÕs Lake Bog is less than two miles from the Green Man. It contains a relic boreal plant community and associated plants such as round-leaved sun dew, large cranberry, grass-pink orchid and marsh five-finger.
Shreve Lake Wildlife Area is less than three miles from us and is a popular fishing place for Shreve village and its environs. Cotton-tail rabbits, ring-necked pheasants and fox squirrels are common in the vicinity. In addition, a great variety of nesting and migrant birds utilize the area.
Killbuck Marsh is OhioÕs largest marshland area (over 5000 acres) outside of the Lake Erie region and extends from a little south of Wooster to just north of Holmesville. We are five miles from the bald eagle observation platform. The area offers exceptional opportunities for viewing wildlife, including endangered trumpeter swans and sandhill cranes.
Funk
Bottoms is six miles away and a choice area for birders. Flocks of Greater White-fronted Goose
and Snow Goose, as well as Tundra Swans have been seen. Shorebirds, sometimes
numbering in the thousands, stop when water levels are suitable. With luck,
youÕll see Sandhill Cranes flying over or feeding in the fields and, in winter,
Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers, and occasionally Short-eared Owls.
Johnson
Woods is considerably further from us than any of the above (about twenty
miles). Nonetheless, itÕs worth mentioning because, as the largest old-growth
forest in Ohio, it attracts many admirers (see above).
